My name is Andrea Schaefer. I am many things to many people but my most important role is being a mom to two precious little girls; Anna, 6 and Amelia, 3. I have been married to my husband Gaetan for 7 years. I am also a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, college graduate, C.I.P. (Chartered Insurance Professional) and entrepreneur. I have been following the Young and the Restless since college when my room-mates and I gathered to watch it on our 13 inch black and white TV in the common room. I love writing, reading, talking, hiking, meeting new people, trees, nature, photography, art and word games. I am also a statistic. I am the one in 5 people who suffer from a mental illness and I am the one in three women who have been sexually abused. Hopefully that last part didn’t scare you off. I am passionate about erasing the stigma of mental illness and about stopping violence against women. As you will come to see, I am very open about my life and my experiences. I believe the most powerful tool to instill change is our voice. By writing, speaking and talking openly without shame about will bring more awareness, compassion and education to these issues.

  1. Andrea,
Your words are powerful and reflective of what many people are feeling right now. I’m writing to ask permission to use a few excerpts in an online class I’m developing about the evolution of our current scientific understanding of mental illness. I would also be interested in interviewing you sometime if you were up to it?

    I’ll leave my e-mail below.

Love the Jeffrey Holland quote! (:
